THE POWER OF GIVING

August 17, 2023 by Keith Senzer

It is important to teach our teens the power of giving and the benefit we see not only for the recipient of their giving but their own personal growth and self-worth.

Here are some important concepts to help solidify this lesson:

Acts of Kindness: Giving without expecting anything in return can create a positive and caring environment around them. Small acts of kindness, like helping a friend with their homework or showing empathy towards someone going through a tough time, can foster a sense of community and support.

Building Trust: When they give their time, attention, and support to others, it often leads to stronger bonds and trust in their relationships. Trust is a crucial element in any friendship or romantic partnership, and giving selflessly can help establish that foundation.

Communication and Listening: Giving involves not just physical gifts but also emotional support. By actively listening to their friends and family, they show that they genuinely care about others thoughts and feelings. This creates an atmosphere of openness, where others feel comfortable sharing with them in return.

Personal Growth: As teens, they are still discovering their identity and interests. By giving themselves opportunities to explore new hobbies, experiences, and knowledge, they open the way to personal growth and self-discovery.

Gratitude and Reciprocity: When they give and receive with gratitude, it fosters a cycle of reciprocity. Being appreciative of what they receive and expressing their thanks encourages others to continue giving, creating a positive feedback loop.

Empathy and Understanding: Giving allows them to put themselves in someone else’s shoes, understanding their needs and emotions. This empathy strengthens their emotional intelligence and helps them navigate various social situations with more compassion.

Leadership and Influence: Teenagers who give back to their communities, whether through volunteering or mentoring others, often become positive role models and influential figures. By leading through giving, they can inspire others to do the same, creating a ripple effect of positive impact.

Personal Fulfillment: Giving can be deeply fulfilling on a personal level. When they contribute to causes they believe in or support their friends during challenging times, they experience a sense of purpose and contentment.

Remember, giving doesn’t always have to be grand gestures; even small acts of kindness and thoughtfulness can make a difference in someone’s life. As a teen, they have the power to create positive change around them through giving, which, in turn, enriches their own life in ways they might never have expected.
