GRIT

October 10, 2023 by Keith Senzer

Grit is a combination of perseverance, determination, and

resilience that enables us to overcome challenges and achieve

our long-term goals.

It is a vital trait that plays a significant role in a teenager’s

personal and academic success.

Academic Success: Teens with grit are more likely to excel

academically. They are better at setting and achieving academic

goals, managing their time effectively, and staying motivated.

Resilience: Gritty teenagers are more resilient in the face of

challenges. They view failures as opportunities to learn and grow,

rather than as insurmountable obstacles.

Emotional Well-being: Teens with grit tend to have higher self

esteem and lower levels of stress and anxiety.

Long-Term Success: Grit is a predictor of long-term success in

various areas of life, including career, relationships, and personal

development.

How Do We Cultivate Grit in Teens?

Encourage Passion: Help teenagers explore their interests and

passions. When they find something they are genuinely

passionate about, they are more likely to develop grit.

Teach Them to Set Goals: Teaching goal-setting skills and the

importance of setting both short-term and long-term goals. Break

down big goals into smaller, achievable steps.

Promote a Growth Mindset: Foster the belief that abilities and

intelligence can be developed through effort and learning. This

helps teens view challenges as opportunities for growth.

Provide Support: Offer emotional support and guidance during

difficult times. Let them know that setbacks are a normal part of

the learning process.

Model Grit: Share your experiences of overcoming challenges

and model what grit should look like in your life.

Grit can be developed over time with the right mindset, support,

and experiences. Teaching teenagers the importance of grit and

providing them with the tools to cultivate it can have a significant

positive impact on their future success and well-being.
